Welcome To 1960 Topps Baseball Cards
This was the first Topps se tin several years to use a horizontal design layout and it would be the last set to do this as well. The set was also a return to the 2 picture format Topps had used between '54 and '56. The set also contained the exact same amount of cards as the 1959 set. This was the first time ever that Topps had ever issued sets with the same amount of cards 2 years in a row.
The 1960 set consisted of 572 cards. The card fronts displayed the dual pictures with the picture on the right being the bigger one along with a full color heat shot. The player`s team logo is placed below the small picture and within that area the players' name, team name, and field position are printed. One color of ink is used for the player`s name and one color is used for the player`s city, team and position.
The backs of the cards are mainly 2 colors. The top half of the backs is tan and the bottom halves are white except where the cartoon panel is. The backs also feature season and career stats. In the tan colored half. At the top of the back is a black colored baseball logo which displays the card number as well as the player`s name, team, field position, and vital statistics. On the lower part the player`s season accomplishments are highlighted on the right and on the left is a cartoon depicting a major career feat. Most of the cards in the set are printed on white stock, but some of the 375-440 cards can be found printed on gray stock.
This set was laden with specialty cards of all sorts. As usual there were the now-expected multiplayer cards, rookie prospects, and all-star subsets, but there were also some brand new subsets. The multi-player cards were randomly placed all throughout the set and they were designed with player`s pictures inset into an 8-sided photo. Above the photo in red there was a title printed and below that was a black diamond with the player`s names in it. The team cards also featured the 8-sided shape in the background printed in two colors. The team`s city name was printed above the picture and the team`s name was printed on a black diamond below the picture. There was a checklist on the back of the team cards as there had been on the team cards of the sets from '58 and '59. Topps totally redesigned the All-Star subset for 1960. They placed the player`s picture right in front of the number 60 for 1960. There is also a notation explaining that the All Stars were chosen by Sport Magazine.
The second series of the set contains a Rookie subset numbered 117-148. The backs of the cards are the same as the backs of the rest of the set, but the fronts are marked differently. The player`s picture is seen within a circle with red white and blue ribbon running behind the picture. In the orange colored background are the words Sport Magazine 1960 Rookie star. Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Kaat, and Frank Howard are the standout cards of the rookie subset. Between cards #16-325 is the subset for the first ever Topps Rookie All-Star Team. The team has one player for each position including left and right handed pitchers. One half of the Rookie All-Star cards are filled with the player`s photo and the other half with the name, team, position, and phrase Selected by the Youth of America. The card fronts also feature the Rookie All-Star trophy logo which went on to be a familiar element of Topps All Star Rookie cards for many years. The first card in this subset is the Willie McCovey.
This was the first set to give every major league manager his own card. Cards #212-227 are the manager`s cards. The cards are laid out vertically and a team pennant log is placed above the picture of the manager`s head. The manager`s pictures bring to mind the Topps card artwork of the 1956 set and have a different look form the pictures on the active players cards in the rest of the 1960 set. On the backs of the manager`s cards, the highlights of their careers are shown in a cartoon panel format. There is also a subset of manager`s cards which depict all the coaches for a given team on one card face. These are numbered 455-470.
There is also a World Series subset commemorating the previous season`s championship games. These cards are numbered 385-391 and each game of the series is given its own card. The last card of the subset is a card specially commemorating the Dodger`s victory. The #389 card is considered by some to be a rookie card for Maury Wills. The card features a stolen play by another player, but it is Wills first Topps card appearance and one of the only ones considering he refused to sign with Topps.
The last series in the set is the one that contains the most high numbered scarce cards starting with card #507. One of the big errors of the set is the J.C. Martin card which has a picture of Gary Peters instead of Martin who is shown on the peters card. The small picture on each card has the right players though. These are uncorrected errors though, so they don't add any value.
